I was talking to someone, and they asked for an example of a generically
good (i.e. Appeals to a broad range of people) bridge line. By bridge, they
meant "something that would be a splurge or what people would buy before

I'm sure the buyers do everything based on sales. Our Macys is the only
big store in central CA so the bridge dept. is large and sales are good
but it cannot compare to a Nordstrom, Saks or Neiman Marcus. The Marc
skirt I bought at NM last call in Beverly Hills is a beautiful silk
skirt marked down to $100. It IMO was such a good buy and it will be
what I'll wear to Easter brunch. Macys here has learned that the
college students in town do spend a lot of money on name brands so

The Jones Signature is the better line of that brand.

Laundry, BCBG and Theory have good sales as do many other brands. They
also hired a personal shopper who is in her late 20s and understands how
to help younger customers. Talbot's is so Talbot's, very basic slightly
higher in prices and without the details of some of these other brands.
I was in Talbot's Monday but saw nothing that appealed to me.

delving into couture". To my surprise, I couldn't come up with anything
that has proven staying power (i.e. Has been considered fashionable for more
than 10-15yrs) other than some of Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein's higher end
labels.

It's strange b/c I can think of examples for lower end (e.g. BCBG) and high
end (e.g. Chanel, Hermes), but nothing in between. Can you guys think of
any?

For catalog/on-line shopping, most of the clothing sold by Garnet Hill
probably fits the bridge category or close to it. Their merchandise
always includes items from Eileen Fisher. I'm another fan of Eileen
Fisher. I like the fabrics, that many of her things can be dressed up
or down, and that her things tend to work well together from year to
year (i.e. last year's skirt looks good with this year's sweater).
