One of my "five favorite pieces" of clothing is a knee-length black cardigan
(or lightweight sweater coat?) that I got at Marshall's five years ago. The
msrp was $230; I paid $39.99.

A couple days ago at Marshall's, I saw that it's back! It's a BCBG Max
Azria (though I think the first one was Max Studio's label). They had it in
black, taupe (which they tagged "charcoal"), olive, and maybe others. The
msrp is still/again $230 and Marshall's has it for $39.99.

It's 85% acrylic, 15% nylon, though it could easily pass for cotton.
Machine wash and dry. It has patch pockets and self-belt (but I removed the
belt and loops. It's 36" long. (There were a lot of other sweater coats
there, some BCBG, but they were much heavier and had some bulky details like
cables and curly, faux-fur-ish trim. They also had some that were like mine
but much longer.)

I'm giving the heads up on this because it is the perfect sweater. You can
wear it in place of a blazer. It's a great sweater layer, is lightweight
enough to wear under a coat. Long enough to look good over skirts, short
enough that it doesn't look like a bathrobe over pants... It has withstood
massive amounts of washer, dryer and wear abuse by me and it still looks
really good.

So I bought the taupe one. And insisted on buying a black one for my DD,
who is still in an oversized sweatshirt phase. When she tried on the HG
sweater, she was surprised at how it made her look and feel. She stood up a
little straighter, said she felt grown up in it, and that it was comfortable
enough to wear for work or just hanging out. Definitely a classic (as
evidenced by the fact that BCBG is selling exactly the same sweater after
five or more years).

I was just at Marhsall's yesterday but didn't see a sweater like that.
Darn.
