Stevie...
Hi there
well let's see. been "uber" busy..
1) computer HD died in a major way on Mon and Tuesday Geek Squad showed up
and spent 6 hours ressurrecting it but did the wrong thing

Charlie Perrin...
As somebody who tends to do dangerous things to computers, it's best
to always keep around a backup of the "My Documents" folder (and set
everything to store in subfolders of it).

Stevie...
*** did have one done about 2 months ago on external drive. now EVERYTHING
in my docs is being kept there.

2) Wed.. cancelled the Oscar stuff because I was reinstaling stuff and
found out the computer still wasn't working

Charlie Perrin...
After having done it both ways, it's much better to hose up a hard
drive using DSL.

That's because I use the approach:
#1 - Install something from CD
#2 - Run its update program
#3 - Repeat steps #1 and #2 until I've installed all the CDs in the
Chuck box.

Stevie...
*** unfortunately where I live, I am too far from the "central office" and
can't get DSL.. which is sad.. I tried. I REALLY tried on that one

Charlie Perrin...
IIRC, you're in CA where they don't let AT&T (nee SBC nee PacBell)
have enough return to deploy Project Pronto.

Latest rumor is that Ed Whitacre is going to pick up BellSouth so he
can put most of the old AT&T back together again. He'll have
everything but the parts that went into Qwest and Verizon, as well as
the hardware manufacturing.

Charlie Perrin...
I guess YMMV must apply to the ability to get DSL vs. cablemodem.

My cable TV company either hasn't figured out that you can make money
offering high-speed Internet access or they don't want to upgrade
their physical plant.

my geek guy suggested a linksys combo d link cable modem + router.. got any
ideas where I can find this?

Charlie Perrin...
Standard electronics-store item but you've got to have a cable company
that does cablemodem. Not all of them do.

Your geek guy should know better than I, however.

3) arranged for appt for Sat for reconfig of puter/network and printers and
then hit Oscar suites on thurs. (more later )
4) Friday back to Oscar suites despite rain..
(see blogs.. though not complete)
5) Sat.. spent 10 hours with geek squad working out the wrong OS install on
the computer that the tuesday guy did and uninstall Norton (cofarb you were
right!!)
and now reinstalled EVERYTHING..
or almost..

Charlie Perrin...
If you use the "install on first use" paradigm, you'll invariably get
a much cleaner hard drive.
