I already washed them once and they did get softer.
How many more times should I wash them (and should I wash and dry and
repeat, or wash a couple of times then dry?)

I haven't researched this, but my guess is that they're the softest
when they're on the verge of falling apart.

They're egyptian cotton 300ct.

Not sure I follow... aren't sheets by nature soft? I have a few sets of
1000 thread sheets and like the "crisp" feel when they are laundered and
pressed. However, if you want soft perhaps silk or satin sheets are better?
But, just brainworking a bit... how do you wash them? Do you like put
Calgon in your water with a high efficiency liquid detergent and also use
Downy® or a similar softener with the wash load? I would imagine that would
"soften" them...
Or, am I missing the boat? If mom were still around i'd ask her -- she was

Exactly. Wash them once, use them, and they'll *gradually* get softer
over time until they finally disintegrate.

It's amazing how much mums do know isn't it? The sad part (for me anyway) is
I didn't realize it until she was gone...
