OT rant: Grr! I hate duvet covers!

My off-topic rant du jour: I really love duvet covers once they're
actually ON comforters but I really, really hate wrestling with them to
put them on. I just put a king sized comforter into a king sized duvet
cover. I've done this with full and queen sized comforters before and
thought those were a pain in the ass. I just learned that the difficulty
of inserting a king sized comforter squarely into a king sized duvet
cover isn't just more difficult. It's logarithmically more difficult and
I was practically postal by the time I was done :) I was half-tempted to
call our two border collies over and to get them to enter the duvet
cover and act as gigantic paper weights (or comforter weights) to keep
the comforter in place while I manipulated the rest of the comforter!
It didn't help that we moved this weekend and I'm thoroughly exhausted.
Perhaps I should have waited!

I saw a Martha Stewart show a few years ago and she tackled this very
problem. She sewed a 6-8 inch tie in two corners of the comforter, one
on each corner. Then she also sewed two 6-8 long ties in the inside
bottom of the duvet cover, one on each corner again. Leaving the duvet
cover turned wrongside out she then tied the ties of the comforter to
the ties of the duvet cover. After this she turned the duvet rightside
out thus leaving the comforter inside and not shifting around.
I hope I explained this clearly.

I used to use butterfly clips from the office to do this. Now I just get my
husband to do it. He's 6 foot 2 and has a large wingspan, so it's much
easier for him to do it lol!

Thanks to both of you! I think the ties are a really good idea. I tend
to move around a lot in bed (sometimes I wake up upside down, which my
head pointed towards the foot of the bad and vice versa :) and the
comforter gets twisted around so much that sometimes it doesn't stay
flat in the duvet. It gets bunched up instead. The ties would be more
likely to keep it in place between washes too!.

This IS a fabulous idea; thank you, thank you, thank you! DH refuses
to use duvet covers because of the difficulty of putting the comforter
in, and the bunching up issue; this should solve it. I'm going to try
it tonight!

I have some older down comforters and covers from The Company Store. They
had installed a system that used small strips of fabric sewn diagonally onto
the corners of the comforters and velcro loops on the inside of the covers.
Really easy to attach. If Company Store is still around...

Oh, yes they are! I love The Company Store.
I have to laugh a bit at Stacy's post because I can feel her pain. I
wrestled with duvets for years until I discovered the inside-out trick. Lay
the comforter on the bed as you would use it. Turn the duvet cover inside
out and lay it over the comforter. Tie the corners (make ties if you don't
have them, it's *very* helpful) Then turn the comforter + duvet right side
in. It's still a little tricky, but not as bad as I used to do it. My friend
was laughing at me because she's always done it this way and I was always
baffled because she likes to change her duvet cover every couple of weeks
because she gets bored with it. I was doing everything I could to avoid it!

I did this with my kids' duvet covers. I put ties on each corner and
also halfway inbetween, on both the inside of the cover and the down
comforter. Then I laid the comforter cover, inside out, on the floor
and laid the comforter on top of it. Tie the ties, and then flip the
cover right-side out and button it up. Works slick and then the
comforter also doesn't shift around when you sleep.

I know your pain! You can buy small padded clips at stores like Linens
N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond that solve this problem. You turn the
duvet inside out, lay it on top of the comforter, clip the four
corners, then turn the duvet right side out.

I have those clips, and if you are a person who likes to grab the
corner of the cover, you will feel them. But they do work....
