I think of "capri pants" as being tapered, and "cropped pants" as being
straight-legged.
I've been seeing a lot of references to "capris" when it seems to me that
"crops" are meant. I was beginning to wonder whether the older term had
overtaken the newer one.
(Not really. I was actually beginning to wonder whether the fashionistas
had all been replaced by pod people, or possibly people who go on cruises
and wear "dressy pants suits" or even "nice church dresses" on formal
nights.)
Then I saw an ad from an upscale department store for crops.
So whaddaya t'ink, posters?

I agree.

It seems to me that merchants generally use the term "cropped" to
describe pants that are slightly above the ankle and "capris" to refer
to pants that are somewhat shorter than that.

That's how I refer to them. Cropped is a lot longer than capri length

Me, too. I was annoyed when I bought a pair of cropped khakis from
Kohl's, and Lee was calling them capris. So not capris - the hem falls
about 4" above my ankle!
