Is it okay to wear suit jacket with different pants?

Can you wear a suit jacket with other pants, and if so what are the
constraints on it?

I have a couple suit jackets with slight pinstripes or plaid, and I was
wondering if it is okay to wear them with solid pants.

The occasion is not super formal, like giving a seminar at a university

As long as the jacket "goes" with the pants you're choosing it
shouldn't be a problem.
Color/texture/pattern in both pieces don't have to match as long as
they complement each other.
