I have a quick question. Someone gave me a beautiful, leather handbag
but...it smells like fish!
I'm not kidding. Is there something I can do to get rid of the stench?
It's not over-powering but still.
Any ideas?

Is it new? If so, perhaps the smell will diminish over time. (I'd put it
in an area where it's exposed to lots of fresh air, if possible, and put a
few dryer sheets inside.)
Is there a brand label in the purse? You could also contact the company to
ask for advice. I'd guess the smell is from some sort of processing (unless
someone stored fish in it!).

If it is fish and it sounds like it is, this might be difficult. Yes, time
will help but that fishy smell is so strong and well, there might be some
sort of leather preserver which has a neutralizer in it. Dublin comes to
mind as it seems to work with leather I've had but never this type of odor...

Meant Dubbin of course. Sorry about that ;-)

This may be a stretch, but I successfully removed cat pee odor from a
Coach bag with a product called Nature's Miracle. (If it can remove
cat pee odor, it should be able to remove just about any odor!) It
did take several applications over a period of a few weeks and lots of
airing out. You can get Nature's Miracle at pet stores. I applied it
liberally, and it didn't damage the leather, but this was an old bag
(probably mid-80's vintage) from back in the day when the leather was
pretty much bullet-proof, and it was black.
