Unfortunately, the networking hasn't worked out. The only place I could
find on the new computer that the plug would fit into was the place where
the router is plugged. I tried unplugging the router and plugging in the
cable, but the computer says the cable is unplugged, so obviously that isn't
the right place. I find that extremely confusing, because the diagram and
instructions that came with the computer identify that as the place for a
network connector. I turned off both computers to connect the cable, then
rebooted both.
Anybody have any other suggestions or ideas?

you're confusing me, joy. the router connection is to the ethernet
port... that would be the CAT-5 or whatever cable... that is not the DCC
that I mentioned in earlier post.
you have two issues as I understand it:
1. connecting to Internet via router
2. connecting to old computer to copy files
the technique for each is different. my previous post on DCC discussed
the copy issue... :) good luck.

I've given up on connecting the old computer to the Internet. I can receive
but I can't send that way.
As for the networking, my son hooked them up correctly (he thinks). The
power was off at the time, and I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I
hope to do that later today.
Thanks for the good luck wishes. I have a feeling I'll need all the luck I
can get.
