**Dalin**...

Jean B....
We lost power. I have no idea how long it was out, because I
was not home when it went out and then went out again almost
immediately. I saw traffic was being detoured onto my street
and that the main road near hear was blocked off by a police
car while utility trucks tended to something. There were
other such occurrence throughout town--and much police action.

**Dalin**...
I'm glad you didn't lose it for long. I take it you didn't have any
electric clocks to reset. In the neighboring town (the two towns run
together) they are still without power. And it's still windy and
snowing heavily this morning. We usually get groceries on Sat.
morning but we're staying in today. There is still a "no unnecessary
traveling" order in effect as lines are still coming down as weakened
trees fall. Temp is 8 degrees and falling, wind chill is minus 15
degrees.

me...
Yep-- there's a lot to be said for some of the older methods of heat
that were independent of hydro!!

Jean B....
That's not good. :-( I'd think that groceries would remain
pretty cold though????

**Dalin**...

Jean B....
Yes, we have electric clocks, but they are the digital ones,
and they either set to 12 and flash, or they get PF on the
screen.... Others start from 12, but that doesn't help if you
don't know when the power went out. Analog clocks are so much
more useful in this regard.

It was 25F here when I went downstairs, so it could be a lot
worse (and probably will be tonight).

It sounds like you have a much nastier situation there. Even
*I* would not like to be without power in such cold weather!
I hope folks get their electricity back soon.

**Dalin**...
I checked your weather and ours. Clear for you with lows of about 6
degrees tonight. We are under another lake effect snow warning from 9
tonight until 6 a.m. with four to eight inches more of snow expected.
Rats!!!!
that was an awfully sweet thing your daughter did. I'm surprised she
didn't get mobbed though as I'm sure some of the evacuees weren't so

**Dalin**...

Jean B....
So how much snow have you gotten? Originally, we were
possibly going to get snow this weekend, but I gather that
prospect disappeared. Suits me.

What has your winter been like? Our has been mostly pretty
warm, with some remarkably warm spells, and only two fairly
big snows--plus a couple of tiny ones.

**Dalin**...
Dec. was very winterlike, and it came early. Lots of snow and cold.
Then most of Jan. was almost like spring. Days of 50+ weather, no
snow on the ground. Just lovely for winter. Then Feb. came. :-(
Back to bad storms and lots of snow. A very strange winter. I
thought the trees were going to bud in Jan.

I don't know the snowfall total, it should be in tomorrow's newspaper
if I remember to look. Probably less than normal because of our
mostly snow free Jan. I think David has only snow blowed once or
twice though I admit sometimes we just plow through it with the cars.
I remember reading Jeanette, about all the abandoned cars because
people couldn't get gas and I always wondered where did the people go?

Well we know at least one family who had shelter and food, thanks to
your daughter and her husband. Angels in disguise. :-)

me...
Oh well---- Here, it's been 'hydro' all of mine, so I'm so accustomed
to that term, it doesn't even fizz on me!! :O)

nice either.
The wind gusts are up to 80 mph and we lost power for three hours.
Temps have plummeted from high 50s into the 20s and still falling.
67,000 without power in this area and many will not have power back
until the end of the weekend. We have it now, I hope it stays. Our
gas fireplace kept us warm but it's not something I would want to run
for hours on end. You're next in line Norma, stay inside and stay
safe.

me...
Dalin, my prayers are certainly with you, and you also, Norma, that

JD Cooper...
good grief!

I hate to hear that stuff 'cause it reminds me of the dredful, horrid
five day frozen nasty we lived thru starting new years night 1980. (up
in north Texas) 30-40 MPH direct winds from the north and temps in
single digits and five inches of ice on everything.... which included
the power lines which became so heavy they snapped off our service pole
and when it went down the service wires to the house yanked the meter
and breaker panel clean off and out of the house, leaving a huge hole in
the side of the house.

14 days without power.

Not a good time.

mj...
Oh dear. I sure hope your power stays with you. I'll be thinking about you
and checking your weather on line. Shadow will need two jackets.

mj

Jean B....
Yeah, I was worried about the trees and flowers too, but I
think I have read it is the amount of daylight they get, not
just the warmth. I haven't see any sprouts, for better or for
worse. Since it will be 8F/-13.3C in Boston tonight, and
hence nearer 0/-17.8C here, that is probably just as well.

**Dalin**...
Oh it was in the paper tonight. We've had 86 inches of snow so far
but I don't know what is normal for this far into winter.

One time a few years ago we did have a week in Jan. with temps of 70
degrees and there were tiny, tiny buds coming out on our maple trees.
When it turned cold I don't know if they died or just went into
hibernation, but when spring came the tree budded as normal.

I did mean to mention though that our grass, which was uncovered until
our storm of yesterday, is green, not the usual brown.

your power stays on.

A secondary non-electric source of heating is a MUST, I'd say, and
thank God for those.

In my house, I not only have a portable propane heater, but the gas
stove also acts as a good source of heat because the pilot light will
light the oven, and it does not need hydro to work the oven at all.

Take care, and keep safe.
