After a whole 1 inch rain the other day I now have a back yard full of
those beautiful Rain Lilies. They are so pretty, a single white blossom
on each plant. The lawn will take a while yet to green up again after
the nice rain and we supposed get quite a bit more this coming week.
Take a look,

Very pretty Arch! Did you plant them? I love lilies and orchids
too. Weather here isn't good for orchids, even indoor ones, but
lilies do quite well.

It is the "Evening Start Rain Lily (Cooperia drummondii) There is only
one bloom per plan, on the end of a solitary leafless stalk which is
roughly a foot tall. The originate from a bulb, deep in the ground.
They last only about 4 days. Leaves finally come from the bulb after
the plant has bloomed. Within a few more days after blooming the seed
pot at the top of the plant opens and tosses out many small seeds. They
bloom from April to November and only after a good rain. Watering them
with the hose doesn't seem to help. Persnickety little things. Also,
they have a lovely aroma which I can no longer smell! Darn it.

There were at least a few ants on each blossom I looked at. I am not
sure what part they play, must be after the nectar I guess and pollonize
the plant in the process. They don't seem to hurt it by eating holes in
the leaves or anything. ???
