listening to some 50's music... what was your favorite pop song? title and
singer? c'mon... tell us.... :) Okay, tell us at least ONE... no
excuses... one song... c'mon... :)
Goromoff...

excuse me, David- which 50s do you mean? :-)
My own tastes always were from the 1650s,1750s and 1850s - all from those
eras.
None of this pop stuff ever registered with me, I'm afraid.
david...

I keep forgetting that some folks on this NG are older than I... :)
Goromoff...
|
hey - I ain't that old, you know! It only seems like it!
|
|
|
mine? several: the drifters with 'there goes my baby'
chuck barry with 'mabelline', little richard with 'long tall sally'..
of course, there were the cadillacs and 'speedo'... remember that? kewl!
and they all had a beat... a real beat to dance to...
patience and prudence and 'tonight you belong to me'... remember? and
their other song... 'gonna get along without you now'...? sweet
memories... :)
I was on a TV dance contest when I first heard mickey and sylvia and 'love
is strange'... (yes, we won the dance competition.. )

Wish I would have had all the nickels that I put in the juke box to
hear...
Hey there.......you with the stars in your eyes.....
Or...Shaboom, shaboom...(dumb lyrics)
It is so hard to name just one song that I connect with. There were so
many.
And for different reasons.

I agree with you Sue, there are just too many to name. I've been
going through the site Robert posted and I remember at least 3/4 of
them that were, at one time or another, my favorites. :-)

We used to go to a "sock hop" every Friday night, (in the summer) it was
outdoors on a big pavillion, We'd work for hours trying to look our best,
then would slather "woodsmen fly dope" all over us to keep the bugs away.
They always started with "Do you want to dance!?"

That's a tough one to answer for me. The first part of the 50's was a very
difficult time in my life so a great deal of it I have literally closed out.
But after looking at some of the tunes in the URL Jean listed I realized
there were some that came to mind. I bookmarked it so I could actually
listen to some of them. But I do recall Ronnie Milsap's "Lost in the 50's
Tonight" and "My Prayer" by the Platters as songs I liked.
david...
|
hi, MJ,
there's a catch22 there... ronnie milsap's song is from the 21st century...
.... i liked the platters, too. 'the great pretender' was very very
popular... :)

Okay, for you... here's rosemary clooney with the original... :)
and here are the words to that song with 'dumb lyrics'... :)
Hey nonny ding dong, alang alang alang
Boom ba-doh, ba-doo ba-doodle-ay
Oh, life could be a dream (shaboom, shaboom)
If I could take you up in paradise up above (shaboom, shaboom)
If you would tell me I'm the only one that you love
Life could be a dream sweetheart
(Hello hello again, shaboom and hopin' we'll meet again)
Oh, life could be a dream (shaboom, shaboom)
If only all my precious plans would come true (shaboom, shaboom)
If you would let me spend my whole life lovin' you
Life could be a dream sweetheart
Now every time I look at you
Something is on my mind (dat-dat-dat-dat-dat-duh)
If you do what I want you to
Baby, we'd be so fine
Oh, life could be a dream (shaboom, shaboom)
If I could take you up in paradise up above (shaboom, shaboom)
If you would tell me I'm the only one that you love
Life could be a dream sweetheart
Shaboom shaboom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Shaboom shaboom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Shaboom shaboom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da, shaboom

Shaboom shaboom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Shaboom shaboom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da, shaboom
Every time I look at you
Somethin' is on my mind
If you do what I want you to
Baby, we'd be so fine
Life could be a dream
If I could take you up in paradise up above
If you would tell me I'm the only one that you love
Life could be a dream sweetheart
(Hello hello again, shaboom and hopin' we'll meet again) boom shaboom
Hey nonny ding dong, alang alang alang (shaboom)
Ba-doh, ba-doo ba-doodle-ay

If only all my precious plans would come true
If you would let me spend my whole life loving you
Life could be a dream sweetheart
(dee-ooy-ooh, shaboom, shaboom)
(dee-ooy-ooh, shaboom, shaboom)
(dee-ooy-ooh, shaboom, shaboom)
Sweetheart!!

Oh, gee, I'll be honest I guess. The one that immediately
spings to mind is "Patches". Lemme see if I can find a
working link.... You might be able to listen to it here, but
it's so slow, that I gave up:
BTW, now that you are FORCING me to go through all my music
links, most of which are defunct, I will share this one:
We need links for all of those songs now, David. :-)

mj and david,
The Platter's were at our 50th High School reunion. They sang all of their
hits. I didn't go. Our Class had 95 kids return for the event. They used
the money from the entrance fee to start a College Scholarship Fund of
$50,000 in memory of our Class who have passed on.

hi, jean, i'm now listening to 'patches'... great song and I had
forgotten... somehow, I think you and dalin and I seem to be the only ones
to remember the pop songs of the 50's... ... they were great songs,
weren't they? :) I know there were many good ones before and after, but
to me, the 50's will always be special... little richard, chuck berry,
early elvis, the platters, shirelles, danny and the juniors and so many
many more.... :) great listening tonight... :)

Being from Louisiana they have a genre of music commonly known as Swamp Pop
which is kind of a blend of Cajun and Black music and is played a lot in
southwest Louisiana and east Texas. That said, my favorite song of that era
was a version of Danny Boy by one James "Sugarboy" Crawford. Brings back
find memories of a short brunette from high school days, Wonder what ever
happened to her.
Sometimes I put on some of it to play and it makes me wish I had my wife in
one of those SW Louisiana honky tonks.

Well, since I was a young AF pilot (in my 20's during the 50's) I think
the sound of a perfectly good aircraft engine is what I like to
remember. LOL

The only pop singer I remember from those days was Johnny Ray, and I didn't
particularly care for him. Remember "Cry"?
I did like "Love and Marriage", which just happened to be popular when Jim
and I were dating, but I have no idea who recorded it.
