My air conditioner is old and moldy, the central inside
unit, that is. It is rusty and the maintenance guy
won't even attempt to clean it. He says I need a new
one. It still works well but stinks a bit. So what I
did is yesterday I put some Pine Sol in the
condensation pan. The pan can't be removed to be
cleaned, that I know of. It has some slime on the
bottom and is hard to reach to clean.. Today I put some
baking soda in there and also left the open box of
baking soda in the unit. I also bought a deodorizer
that sticks or hangs on the ac filter, and gives off a
nice aroma. No smell anymore but I still worry about
the germs. We shall see next year what the financial
situation is so I can get a new unit.

There is an air intake as well as a blower out. Find the intake. Get a
can of Lysol and spray it in there while the a/c is on, or maybe even
spray some bleach solution in there. As others have said mold is very
bad. Might even be the cause of some of your medical issues.

Uh, the through-the-wall unit I got rid of was moldy.... :-(

Yuck! They're not supposed to do that. Bad installation, maybe? When
mine is running it constantly drips outside. Fortunately one unit is
right above a flower garden, so the water's not wasted. :-)

My old one dripped, but noticeably less than my daughter's,
which is on the same wall. The new one didn't drip for a LONG
time, but now it is dripping a bit. I think water can build
up before it drips....
It's good that your drips aren't wasted. Ours land on the
driveway. In fact, the FedEx delivery person left a package
right under the drips!

Note: It is Good that it drips. It should start dripping fairly soon after
turning it on. If it does not, then it may need to be tilted more toward the
outside. The water is _supposd_ to run out.

Wait! It's my daughter's that drips copiously. Mine didn't
drip for a long time and now barely does--on rare occasions.

Thanks, Jean. I checked and found where they said it's probably caused by a
clogged air conditioner drain. I'll have my mechanic look at that the next
time I take the car in.

It's the non-dripping I'm worried about.

Yup. Tilt it a little more to the outside, unless it is a very good a/c, in which
case it may spray the moisture into the air causing it to evaporate.

Be very careful what you combine. You've already put Pine Sol and
baking soda in there, if you start messing with bleach you may run into
trouble.
Bleach would have been a great idea if you'd done it from the start.
