david...
i noticed today that the eudora email client will cease being sold in late
2007, replaced by an open source version... and... the developer of the
open source version will be the folks who give you thunderbird.... :)
their statement is that they plan to advance both products and not merge
them into one... interesting future for my favorite email program... but
it seems i'll never have to pay for the full version again... :)

Jean B....
Yes. That is one reason why I have been holding out. I
thought it was going to be free before then though.... Okay,
on November 1, 2006, Qualcomm said: "We are pleased to offer
a final version of the commercial product at a 60% discount
until the launch of the upcoming open source version of
Eudora, scheduled for release in the first half of calendar
year 2007. "

Actually I did get a notice that claimed I could get the most
recent version free, having paid before. Is that true? And
if so, would I have any problem getting my mailboxes
transferred? Some of them are rather full....

Marilee...
Speaking of this, it was the hardest thing about reformatting one of my
computers--getting the backed up email files to actually reappear in email.
That was OE to OE, same version. It took a lot of web detective work on my
part to find the fairly simple "fix". (I'm sure there are any number of
people who know how off the tops of their heads, but I am not one of them.)

Jean B....
Er, that's a bit scary, Marilee. I am in the same category.

david...
OE has some pecularities in its file structure and there are some software
products that supposedly maintain the files for you.... the good news about
OE is that there are so many helpful websites to assist in fixing things...

david...
well, if they said you could.... depends on how long ago you paid,
typically... the eudora install overlays the current program modules and
leaves the mailboxes alone, so that usually isn't a problem.

david...
The new name appears to be Penelope... at least that's the project name.
