The Group
Part One
Butterkup was a white-knuckle flyer. The two double scotches she gulped
down at the airport bar didn't seem to have any effect. She gripped her
husband's hand tightly at that weightless moment when the ground falls away
from the plane. Her infectious fear made Stan uneasy about flying. But now,
what really made him nervous was the look on the flight attendant's face as
she was standing in front of the pilot's compartment giving instructions to
the passengers. She spoke nervously. Her voice was faltering and shaky.
Directly behind her was a pilot wearing a uniform that seemed too large for
his short body. The pilot's collar hung loosely around his neck below his
large facial beard. Sitting in the front seat, Stan saw the pilot's door had
opened slightly, just enough for him to see the soles of two bare feet lying
on the floor.
Maybe the passengers seated behind him didn't see what he saw, but they
must have noticed the look on the attendant's face and heard her. There was
something wrong, and he reckoned he'd soon find out.
