Janie...
David was leaving for work this morning when he saw a beautiful home
entertainment sitting by the curb. He stopped and couldn't find nothing
wrong with it. The owner came out and David asked if this was for the trash.
He said yes but just take it if you want it. David came back to get Al and
we were all stunned. It's really pretty.

I changed the belt on my vacuum cleaner a week ago . Next time, I
think I'll toss it! My fingers still ache from putting it back
together. I hate to vacuum anyway.

Learn something everyday:-))

What you folks are doing is called "pre-collection" around here.

BTW alt.dumpster is _the_ group for stories on the topic.

I wonder if rising gas costs will reduce pre-collection.
Ah, curbside recycling. I used to go alley-picking with a friend, and
the stuff we got was amazing. Furniture, clothes, electronics,
appliances, toys, books (tons of books!) kitchen things, you name it. I
have a lovely persian-type rug that I'm pretty sure was quite the item at
one time. My second-best finds were two very expensive cat furniture
thingies, but my very best find was a child's playhouse. Tristan loves
that thing, and whenever kids come over to play, they always go straight
for the playhouse. :-)

I might have been more interested in furniture etc., if I
hadn't had the experience of caring for my demented father.
Caveat emptor is all I can say, although I guess "buyer" is
incorrect.

There's always an 'ick' factor in going through other people's stuff.
But the vast majority of it is clean and in good shape. Your nose is
your best friend in this situation - if you go near a pile of stuff and
there's a strong smell, you just move on to the next pile.

The carpet I got that is so beautiful really stank, but my friend said
that I should just put it on the lawn and clean it with Simple Green, and
she was right. No smell, the colors really came out, and it didn't hurt
the lawn. :-)

I think it's wonderful that people can find a use for things others throw
away. When my kids helped me clean out my garage, there were some things
that were obviously trash, some that were still useful and some dubious. I
set aside the useful ones for the Rescue Mission to pick up. My daughter
insisted the dubious things should be put out with the trash, for which I
had to have a special pickup. (It's a two-car garage, and the cleaning made
room for a car to fit inside.) Before the trash truck could arrive, a
couple with a pickup truck stopped by and took all of the dubious items and
some that I considered pure trash. It made me happy. I'm highly in favor
of recycling. In fact, I've liked the idea before the word was invented.
When I lose something that is still usable, I always hope that someone who
can use it will find it.

I went over to my son's one day and with the trash was an oak end
table, one of a pair. I asked what was wrong with it and he said the
kids (they were little at the time) wrecked the finish and it was
falling apart. I brought it home, tightened screws, glued the drawer

Jean B....
That might be interesting. Maybe they are returning it to
show how wasteful folks are.

back together, and sanded and refinished the top. Looks great
downstairs and I won't give it back. LOL

Jean B....
Wow, indeed. I hope y'all get lots of enjoyment out of it!
