Joy's house problems have come to Vegas. It wasn't too long ago it was the
kitchen sink. Then the battery in the alarm system was going (They last 8 to
10 years) and it started beeping every few hours.
We have leased this house for almost 13 years and just a few months ago the
property management changed. The new one could care less about problems or
so it seems. Since I knew how to stop the beeping it was no big deal they
seemed to think. Well, not to me, beeping every few hours makes it difficult
to sleep. Not arming the system has no effect on stopping it. I still had to
put the code in to get it stop for a bit. The management company finally
agreed to having the alarm company come out and put in a new battery and we
could submit the bill to them that we had to pay at the time of service. Why
didn't I find out what kind of battery I needed, buy it and put it in rather
than the paying for a service call you ask. The alarm company has the key to
the box in the coat closet that houses the battery.
Friday morning the spring in the garage door snapped and it wouldn't open.
Pull the cord that hangs down for manual opening you say. Doing that had no
effect whatsoever on moving the door. Looking at all the stuff we realized
cables on each side that were supposed to be in a track were flapping
around. BTW, there is no handle to get hold of to force it up. None of us
separately or collectively could raise that door. Several hours later almost
all of the mechanism in the door had been replaced and we were free to roam
once again.
The owner is selling the house and we are scheduled to move the 16th of
June. Our refrigerator we planned to use in the garage where we are moving
as we don't need one in the townhouse. Therefore, we sold the small one we
had been using in the garage. Sunday as we were putting food away we
realized there was frost in the frost free freezer. You guessed it. The
refrigerator was broken. To shorten this tale of woe - it's 13 years old and
not fixable for less than what a fancy new one sells for. All we needed was
a smaller one to put in the garage when we move and to use in the house now
for the next 3 weeks. Finally talked Lowes into an emergency delivery for
today but just had a call that they can't do it - will have to be tomorrow.
It's still an emergency as far as they are concerned because Friday was the
first open day. Lowes was the third place we had been trying to get an
earlier than next week delivery date. So over a $100 at least of food is
lost. With the ice we have everything in we probably could have salvaged
some but doubt if much will be now that it's tomorrow. I'm sure the delivery
will probably be late afternoon the way things are going.
Bad words a plenty.................... Joy you should be ok for a while as I
have the problem genie with me.

It's a real shame you get hit with all these expenses when you are
moving. If it's any consolation, the same thing happens when you own
and are getting read to move.

You have my sympathy, mj! Just moving would be enough to deal with!

years too. I hope you enjoy your new place as much.

It's nice but we are going from a large 4 bedroom to a small 3 bedroom so
it's going to take some adjusting that's for sure. I won't miss the
responsibility for the yard that's one plus.

Fortunately, only the refrigerator is our expense and since it will be in
the garage we were able to buy a very basic model. But working with the new
management company made us feel like we were purposely tearing the house up.
It's 13 years old and it's not our fault things haven't been regularly
serviced. From the number of hot water heaters I have seen the last few
months out for pick up around the neighborhood I would say the hot water
heater is due any day now. Please let it wait until after the 15th! Our
washer and dryer are the same age as the frig so only want to have those
last until I can call Safe Nest for pick up. Things have to be working
before any of the charities take them.
