First off, I was in the kitchen, heard a thump and there was a little
bird that had flown into the kitchen window, under the patio roof) She
sat there awhile, stunned..kept looking in the window, not sure if she
could see her reflection or me???She recovered and flew away.
Mr. and Mrs Quail did their morning walk ( together) along the back
wall. The time varies, otherwise I would have gotten a picture of them.
I saw one Lady Robin and thought to myself, my she has long thin legs,
and is slightly bow-legged.. she hopped around the lawn with a limp, I
realized she must be the one that had an injured leg a week or so ago.
glad she is alive and well.
My porch eaves have been a sleeping spot for two birds during the
winter, etc. Well now, one is soooo busy trying to form a nest.. My
porch had a lot of twigs and grassy bits, looked up and saw how she was
making her nest on the tiny area. She just flew in with quite a long
twig and was working very hard to bend it, or cut it with her bill..
she got some into the hollow of the nest, and a long piece stuck out,
she yanked and pulled it close to her, tried again and again to fold or
break it for a fit. I've also seen her take some pieces over to the
other eave..not sure if she thinks the nest would be bigger if she took
some over there, or she plans to use both of them???The one nesting in
the eave out back is such a good nester, when it is really hot she
stands and fluffs out her wings, I put cool water out for her to use,
but I don't think she has yet. She's one diligent momma to be. She
does not fly off when I go out on the patio, keeps an eye on me , tho.
Bye, from busy Birdland, Bette

Sweet little birds have found a warm and loving place to call home. I worry
about the one in the front though because it is such a small place to raise
a family. Years ago I had one do the same thing and each year the babies
fell out. I than put something up there so she couldn't come back. I always
hoped she found a safer place. As I sat on my couch looking out my window
yesterday afternoon during a break in the wind and clouds I saw a bird
working hard and fast to build a nest. The tree is fairly young so hopefully
it is sturdy enough to keep her nest secure.

Maybe you could leave out some shorter twigs for her, or strands from a
broom? I'm not really into house building when it comes to birds. :)
Harry used to build houses for swallows when we lived on Lake
Champlain. We had them fastened in several places on the house and in
all the trees nearby to keep down the mosquito population. It worked
very well.

I love to see the birds build their nests in the spring. If you put
out little pieces of yarn or string they appreciate it very much. :-)
