Well, I'm back but the news hasn't changed much. I went to the Doctor today
and found out I have Type II Diabetes. I have to take a pill in the morning
and then test my blood sugar twice a day. I also have to go to class to
find out how this ailment works. I've never been sure of it in my life. I
think that if I could walk normally I wouldn't have this at all. Until I
can though I have to watch my 2,000 calories a day diet (and eating in a
restaurant isn't easy) and test away.

If you can handle another newsgroup, check out alt.support.diabetes.
There's rather a lot of noise to signal, but the advice is for the most
part really solid.
As one of the best posters there said, there are two ways to attack a
problem. You can list every possible cause and explore every one, and
list every possible solution and explore every one, or you can find a guy
who's already solved the problem and do what he did. That's what asd
does - it's full of people who have maintained good control, and who
(more or less) agree on what is necessary. Surprise! It's not what the
AMA or the ADA recommends.
There's also a book that's a basic primer of all things diabetic: _Type 2
Diabetes: The First Year_ by Gretchen Becker. It's split up so that you
can just read about how to manage your diabetes, or if you're interested,
you can also find out about all the science that's behind what's
happening to you. The author is very readable, and she's a former
regular of asd.
Best of luck to you in this - hard work now will extend your life.

Monday last I had an appointment with the Cardio Vascular Surgeon but he had
to do an emergency open heart surgery so he will see me this coming Monday.
My Internist has been talking to him and my Cardiologist and I may be a
candidate for a new surgery where they use a stent on the artery. If so
then it is considered minimally evasive. That being the case it might be
possible for me to have another surgeon fix the hernia which lies to the
left of my belly button. I guess you would call it a "two fer".
The Surgeon will make the call on which surgery needs to be done first. The
carotid artery or the abdominal aneurysm. I have no idea when this will
take place though. Probably soon. Not on Tuesday though as that is
Election day and I have a friend running for Sheriff and he needs my
vote:-))
So, I've gone from elective surgery to "must have" surgery.
I mentioned this to my Doctor and she said she felt I could have all of them
done this year. I'm not sure I want to go that route right now. I hate
hanging around Hospitals. They are spooky places:-)
Oh, anyone want to assume my identity and go in my place? You can send me
an anonymous email if you do and I'll try to arrange it:-)
Finally I often wonder why I took Woodshop in High School and not Home
Economics? At least I could cook and now I never do any woodworking.
That is all for now.

Egad, Don! You have enough on your plate--and you did before
this latest news too. :-(
BTW, interestingly, I wish I'd taken shop and not home ec--a
choice would have been nice. (Now there is neither, here,
anyway....)

It seems to me that the quicker everything can be taken care of, the better.
Hanging around hospitals isn't fun, but neither is being in constant pain.
I really hope they can do the artery and the aneurism at the same time - and
the sooner the better. The best thing about surgery is having it over with.

Don...I can appreciate your concern..my friend...I would also feel the
same,as I am sure ALL of us would..It is only natural to feel like you do..I
would feel the very same and possibly even more than you , Don...I hate
hospitals !..But when one needs these things done, we go into them and know
that life will definitely be better for us 'After' the events !...
As to the delays..well.that is par for the course ..mate !... Just
think..after all these things..life will be so much better quality !

Looks like your in for a big "season". So, let's get started and get it
over with. That's the way I feel about it.

Uh....do you want me to send Stan down and you two can take a cooking class
together? He has a hard time with toast.

There is Meals on Wheels too but I don't know if they do special
diets.

My FIL had diabetes, and he and my MIL had Meals on Wheels. They both hated
them. I thought they looked pretty good.
But, about once a week I would throw out what they didn't eat.

I keep thinking I'm gonna deliver Meals on Wheels--but I still
can't figure out how I'd do it in really bad winter weather,
and I wouldn't want to let anyone down. I think MoW also can
serve as a small check on how a person/couple are doing....

Looking at a year of surgery does not make for happy thoughts. But,
the sooner the better and you'll be on your way to recovery.

sense of humor is inspirational. you know you're in our thoughts as you go
through this -- and I'm so glad that you have this NG always there for you.

I liked that. Some one checked up on Mom and Dad.

Good! Sometimes it is the only outside view anyone gets.
Maybe the first bit of help that is accepted.... I think it
can be a lot more important than just delivering
meals--although that in and of itself can be pretty important.
