Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but just had to drop by to tell you
all that eldest granddaughter Carolyn has just received an offer of a place
in the Bachelor of Social Work course at University of South Australia. She
is just 17. She has done it tough, so it is nice to see her reaping the
rewards.
Beaming Di, who is thinking she might have to go back to work to help with
the textbooks .....:)

You should be beaming!! The price of textbooks for my granddaughter's
freshman year at college blew me away so understand why you might need to
work again. :-)
Diane...
|
Makes me think I'm in the wrong business, mj, cos someone's making a killing
here!
Di.....:)

All the students here at the university have to have laptops too.

How wonderful Di! I can see your buttons popping from here and I have
the feeling she is going to ruin a lot of your blouses in the years to
come. :-)

I surely hope so Dalin! I was a tad concerned when I saw her ogling
new-born babies recently ! I'm too young to be a great- grandmother!
Di<~~~~who is pretty sure babies are on the back-burner for now! :)

That is so great and I know you are very proud of your granddaughter.

How true! The college text books are terribly expensive now. And don't
forget a big hug for your granddaughter! More power to her!

Congratulations to Caroline! Any chance she can get a scholarship to help
defer costs?
Is that the University where we went to the concert?
|
Jane...
|
Well, congratulations to Carolyn, and to you and her parents for producing
such a bright and hard working young woman.

Ah thanks Jean.....it is so nice to see her blossoming like this.
Di.....:)

Good Heavens! At Uni SA the blurb suggests that life will be easier if they
do have their own pc, but there are areas scattered around the campus called
computer hubs where students without their own computer access can research
at will.
Di....:)

Although most have lap tops at UNNR the only requirement is they have a
computer in the dorm or at home if they live off campus because some of the
classes, homework, etc., are done on the computer. My granddaughter doesn't
have one but they are a big theft risk so probably just as well we couldn't
swing it. Two were stolen in her dorm the weekend of the move in.
Diane...
|
Oh that would be heartbreaking, wouldn't it?
Luckily the University is within easy commuting distance so Carolyn is
living at home, and there are three computers in the house so she'll be
OK...until she decides she wants a laptop for class!
Di.....:)

I think the kids take their lappies to class and keep notes on them.
But they are used for more than that. The uni. says it also has to
meet certain performance standards, no bringing an older one from
home. I imagine there are computer hubs on campus too.

All my brother's children had computers to take with them.
With the oldest child, who was not really a computer person, he gave her his
old PC, with Word and Excel, and she was fine with it.
With each child, the computer got better, until the last one has a machine
that most of us would envy, dual processor, lots of RAM and with so much
storage, I probably won't use that much for the rest of my life. He also has
an old laptop that he takes to class with him, but for editing his class
projects (film), he really needs all the speed, memory and storage he can
get. But if he didn't have his own equipment, he'd never get his homework
done! He even lugged his desktop home over Christmas to work on a project,
because his father's equipment is just too slow.
Sure different from when I went to school, when the really lucky people had
their own manual typewriters to do papers on!

That's great, Di. You have every reason to be proud. Kudos
to Carolyn!

Di,
You aren't old enough to have a Granddaughter that is 17. Well, I didn't
think you were anyway:-) Congratulations to the new Freshman. They do call
them Freshman these days don't they?
Don and his Devil
Diane...
|
hahah! You old smoothie! Thanks for the congrats Don, I know lots of
people here have grandchildren who are Uni students, but this is my first
and kinda special!
Historically we have only ever used the term Undergraduate. Is the term
Freshman used for women as well?
Gently
Di....:)
Jean B....
|
So there's no differentiation among the levels in each
category, or do you just call them year thus and so?
|
Yoj...
|
Don has probably gone to bed by now, so I'll answer. Yes, first-year
students in four year colleges, universities and high schools are freshmen,
whether they are men or women. Second year is sophmore, then junior and
finally senior.
Doesn't Oz have terms to distinguish between the different years for
undergraduates?
Paco...
|
And those years go by fast. When I was in school I thought it would be
forever. Went by fast!
