I need to check several dates over the past two or three years.
Yes, I know the adage "web-search is my friend" but so is electricity, and if you
don't know just how to use it, then it ain't!

Interesting stuff, thank you.
lots of info. Note: site may be slightly (2005) out of date.

As all may have noticed I am having trouble with my ISP's (verizon) system.
Their email system is messed up and I try to do a BCC of everything I post.

Well there is something wrong with verizon.yahoo.outgoing.mail but I got
around it by changing a setting in my newsreader.

I just thought you'd developed a stutter. ;-)

I shall bookmark it to look at later. I can't seem to get half the
websites I try today. Is everybody having that trouble? Is it because
of the power outages in NY?

Ooooo, I'm gonna spend many hours there (not just looking at
web-search). THANKS!

Ooooh, that's good to know. Next: I frequently want to
search for more than one phrase.... Also, it would help if
they included punctuation--and perhaps caps. And do they
eliminate articles? I may be thinking of the old hotbot. I
remember trying to find something, where the search really
depended on the article(s) not being eliminated.... Hmmm. Is
there an ng re searching? I used to get a newsletter re such,
but it has been defunct for quite awhile--or perhpas it lives
again, and I should check.

If you want to include the articles, put the exact phrase in double quote
marks. But you really don't want them to include punctuation, it would
be a nightmare. Frex, if you were searching for St. John's Wort, you'd
have to do one search with the period but without the apostrophe, one
with the apostrophe but without the period, one with both, and one
without both. And if you have to get the capitalization right, that's
three more possibilities, for a total of 64 different searches, whereas
now you just do one.
I just went to look for the page that had all the good info I got on
web-search, but web-search is apparently down today. Is that the east coast
blackout's fault?

I am delighted to be of service

Well, normally I wouldn't include puntuation, but on rare
occasions it would be useful. Maybe it should be a box you
can check if you REALLY do want to include it.

Hm. Maybe you could suggest to web-search? They're always looking for ways
to make themselves even better.
Jean B....

Maybe so. I'll see if they have a good "contact us" option.

This is so true. Sometimes you put in just the right phrase, and exactly
what you want pops up. Most of the time you're just not that lucky. And
if you don't have any idea of what terms to use, you're, well, SOL.
I lucked out this time: I entered (without
the angle brackets) and got a slew of hits.
|
I have had a go, but, not knowing what to stick in the thingy, I'm coming up
with rows of lemons.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
I need to answer such as "25th July 2001" and other dates in the subsequent
years - what day of the week did those dates fall on?

I'm glad you got some good answers. sometimes when I'm in a hurry for a
single date, i just rightclick the date/time icon on tray, change date,
record the info, and change date back... :)
