Proud Granny Di !

Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but just had to drop by to tell you
all that eldest granddaughter Carolyn has just received an offer of a place
in the Bachelor of Social Work course at University of South Australia. She
is just 17. She has done it tough, so it is nice to see her reaping the
rewards.
Beaming Di, who is thinking she might have to go back to work to help with
the textbooks .....:)

Congratulations to Caroline! Any chance she can get a scholarship to help
defer costs?

How true! The college text books are terribly expensive now. And don't
forget a big hug for your granddaughter! More power to her!

You aren't old enough to have a Granddaughter that is 17. Well, I didn't
think you were anyway:-) Congratulations to the new Freshman. They do call
them Freshman these days don't they?

hahah! You old smoothie! Thanks for the congrats Don, I know lots of
people here have grandchildren who are Uni students, but this is my first
and kinda special!
Historically we have only ever used the term Undergraduate. Is the term
Freshman used for women as well?

Yes, that is interesting Jeanette. Our students are either primary < up to
year 7> secondary, then
tertiary < undergraduate until they gain their first degree, then graduate
students for their honours, masters or PhD . Of course they can be PhD in
one discipline and join an undergraduate program in another discipline etc!

So there's no differentiation among the levels in each
category, or do you just call them year thus and so?

Don has probably gone to bed by now, so I'll answer. Yes, first-year
students in four year colleges, universities and high schools are freshmen,
whether they are men or women. Second year is sophmore, then junior and
finally senior.

Doesn't Oz have terms to distinguish between the different years for
undergraduates?

You should be beaming!! The price of textbooks for my granddaughter's
freshman year at college blew me away so understand why you might need to
work again. :-)

work, but dont it make you feel like you're getting rewardedfor something
too when they do well? Hope money starts raining down from heaven!

How wonderful Di! I can see your buttons popping from here and I have

Although most have lap tops at UNNR the only requirement is they have a
computer in the dorm or at home if they live off campus because some of the
classes, homework, etc., are done on the computer. My granddaughter doesn't
have one but they are a big theft risk so probably just as well we couldn't
swing it. Two were stolen in her dorm the weekend of the move in.

Oh that would be heartbreaking, wouldn't it?
Luckily the University is within easy commuting distance so Carolyn is
living at home, and there are three computers in the house so she'll be
OK...until she decides she wants a laptop for class!

Good Heavens! At Uni SA the blurb suggests that life will be easier if they
do have their own pc, but there are areas scattered around the campus called
computer hubs where students without their own computer access can research
at will.

And those years go by fast. When I was in school I thought it would be

I think the kids take their lappies to class and keep notes on them.
But they are used for more than that. The uni. says it also has to
meet certain performance standards, no bringing an older one from
home. I imagine there are computer hubs on campus too.

new-born babies recently ! I'm too young to be a great- grandmother!
