gruffydd...
saw a wondrous sight last week. I was sitting in the car waiting for lady
wife to have her hair done, before we went away for a few days. The side
street I was on was part of a crossroads, with the cross road, left to right
about 50 feet away, and I had a clear view up the road in front of me.
There was a vehicle parked on the cross road, to my right, and it's tail end
was about a car length from the junction. I saw a dog trotting down the
pavement, coming towards me from the other side of the junction. It glanced
left at each gateway [path to the door] but at each vehicle entrance it
paused and peered round the gatepost before it trotted on. it did this
several times, just glancing as it passed the footpath, but pausing where a
car could appear. then it came to the junction where it paused as it came
to the end of the building and looked left. The car was there so it could
not see up the road. and this was the most amazing part of it, the dog moved
forward, into the road way, and sat behind the car whilst it looked up the
road. all was clear so it crossed the road to where I was and carried on
down the road, doing the same thing all the way down.
a Heinz 57 would have been a pedigree dog compared with this one by the
looks of him
I have seen dogs look for traffic when told, indeed mine are trained to do
that, but as for doing it when they are alone????

Goromoff...
I once saw a young girl, sat at the pavement edge, teaching road sense to
her dog by looking both ways for traffic.

JD Cooper...
Many dogs become what we call "road wise". They learn it from other dogs
mostly. It is always neat to see, and a tesitment to their ability to
learn. Some get left out on that learning and you know how they end up.
