We had a doddle of a day getting there. Walked through reception at the
airport this end, the flight was a dream, very short, and we had no problems
getting through Schipol. Straight onto a train, which might as well have
been waiting for us because it pulled away as soon as we were aboard. We
arrived at Amsterdam Centraal Station about 9am, and asked for directions
for the Hotel, which we were told was about ten minutes walk from there.
The information people sent us in a totally wrong direction. After nearly
three hours we managed it, but could not have the room till 3pm. I rang
'Lamb' [Loes] and she kindly came to meet us and took us back to her home
where we met her husband and had coffee. A very kind gesture for her to
give up her time for strangers.
We had lunch then went back to the Hotel and we were allowed to have the
room. We went up in the lift to the third floor, where the lift stopped.
and stopped. and stopped. the doors started to open them clunk, they
stuck. we could not open them. I rang the alarm bell and after about a
half hour some other guests, coming to the lift to use it, found us. they
went to get reception who had not heard the alarm, and said they could not
hear it in reception.
Ah well. from there it improved. we saw Ann Frank's house, many of the
canals, and went to Delft for the day. a very lovely place.

I'm sure glad things improved! I would have panicked being stuck in
an elevator for a half hour. Did you have to carry your luggage for
that three hours?

Well you can't say your first day was boring. The reception area not hearing
the lift alarm must have made you feel a little insecure each time you used
it.

Pleased you enjoyed Amsterdam, lovely city. Loes is a very nice lady
we met her last year whilst on a visit to Holland.

I, too, met Loes and her husband on a visit to Amsterdam! Lovely lady,
she had bought a special dutch cake, since she had heard on the grapevine
that it was my birthday!
I also met Graham, when we visited Leeuwarden, in Friesland.
