I just wanted to let you all know that Skype, a VoIP telephony service,
has free calling to any phone in the USA and Canada until the end of the
year. I've been using it quite a lot for a while for computer-to-
computer conversations with my friends in Utah, Maryland, and North
Dakota. Now I'm calling computer-to-phone, as well.
They're only doing free service until the end of the year to get people
interested. VoIP is the way to go, really. The sound quality beats the
telephone all to pieces, and you can't beat the price. :-)

to my knowledge, it's still a problem during power outages...

True. I do have a landline, but I don't use it for long distance any
more.

well, like you, chat, i am assuming that somewhere down the line the need
for duplicate services will disappear -- or the price for land line will
drop significantly. we pay for a land line and also two cell phones and i
know we should be able to get by more cheaply.. however, we don't call
long distance very often at all... if we did, we'd rethink what services

I think in a few years, most localities will have free wi-fi, and then
all you'd need is a wi-fi card and a cell phone. And you'd only need the
cell for power failures.
I love the internet.

we use.
the first clue to me was several years ago when we had dialup.... we
could be on all day long with no extra service fees... pricing needs to
be for the service and not for the distance.... :)
