I don't have Alexis today.. school's out... another neighbor is
watching her.
I've been working on adding to her vocabulary... I've started in the
A's
so far, About and Above....want her to know the meaning and different
ways to use each word . Will write each word down for her to copy,
etc.Her Mom feels she should be doing better in kindergarten, so
thought this might help her a bit. Got any good words we can use? Bette

Let's see - After, Apple, Ache, Adopt, Again, Ahead, Alive, Aloud, Among,
Around, Ash, At, Avenue, Axe, maybe Aardvark, just for fun?
We've come a long way, and I don't know if that's a good thing. When my
kids were in kindergarten, nobody worried about how well a child was doing
at that level, unless they had trouble getting along with other children.

Hmmm. I have no idea what she does and doesn't know, so I
can't really help with that, BUT I have a few suggestions:
1. A book: "What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know:
Preparing Your Child for a Lifetime of Learning" by E. D.
Hirsch, Jr. (there may be a revised version with the subtitle
"Fundamentals of a Good Kindergarten Education); and
2. There's a series of flashcards, called Brain Quest. I
don't know what level they start at, but maybe you can mix all
the levels up to the Kindergarten set and then have some fun
with Alexis.
3. Look into some of the educational computer programs.
Bette, I get the feeling that Alexis's problems are caused by
deprivation and that she is a smart kid. I'm sure you try and
will continue to try to reinforce that with her, so she
doesn't feel demeaned by any of the approaches you take.
Please tell her that you have lots of friends who think she's
a great kid and have lots of faith in her. I am one of those
friends.
