For all those of you who have been sleepless in your beds all night,
wondering if, when and what
Knut Willy has planned to buy or have bought in the chaotic world of PC's
I can now inform that the the new baby has arrived in our world, with the
name of IBM.
I have been into that same shop before, telling I was in doubt whether
buying a Dell Inspiron 6400 or an IBM one. (This is an IBM store, but
they also sell other brands).
The salesperson knowing my lust for a Dell, almost met me in the doorway
with a copy of todays info from a Norwegian Newspaper, and a smile wider
than ever before recorded. The news was that Dell has had big problems
with batteries on their portables. Lots of them has burned!!

I believe the warning is about Sony batteries. They are used in many
computers.

Buy an IBM, my friend, said the man. I did. Have not so far unpacked or
opened any boxes, as we are expecting a guest within half an hour.

Well, I sure hope you have it up and running by then--and not
bursting into flames either!

expect any more.
To what I replied, I'm as happy as can be. Don't want anything more.

Now I can finally get a good night's rest. :)
Enjoy your new toy.

What a nice present for yourself, Knut! Re the Dell vs IBM,
don't you think that since Dell is aware of the problem, PCs
being sold will have had that fixed? I should hope it means
it would be even safer to buy a Dell, but then I could well be
wrong!

well, sounds like a mixture of laughs, smiles and curses lie ahead in the
Knut household... :)

ah, but there's the rub... :) buying a new computer is an event full of
smiles and laughter and joy...
and then you turn it on and discover a whole new world of stuff to learn...
and days and weeks of moving software from old computer to new computer...
and, more than likely, at least a few times when frustration sets in... :)

made by Sony and badged for Dell, but maybe some of same type under Sony
name.

But ain't it been fun?!

Speaking of fun, has YOUR computer been fixed yet, Jim?

Mine was a piece of cake. I decided that since I did have some sort of
warrenty, I see if it was any good. I took it back to Best Buy, put it
on the counter and described what was wrong while it booted up. He was
quite diplomatic about telling me that I'd unknowingly changed something
on the network and showed me how to reset it (for next time). No Charge.

we have an HP 1400... works very well for our needs. cost approx $70...
prints, scans, copies.... that we like because we had never had a copier
before and the scanner function is excellent. supposedly scans OCR, but I
haven't tried that yet... :)

Thanks, david. I couldn't find the 1400, but I found a couple of other
reasonably priced HP color printers and an all-in-one. I'll ruminate a
while, and then will probably order one of them.

I think you will be very very happy with a laptop Sir K. I love mine.
So easy to move, and you can take it most anywhere.

Congratulations! Have fun with your new baby. As I know from experience,
this is a good place to come with questions when you have the problems a new
computer always seems to bring.
