david...
ok, i'm still a novice, and may always be... :) here goes..

what's the difference between 'goals against' and 'goals for'.. ? I

Michael Fanner...
The 'Goals for' column in the league table shows how many goals the team
has scored. The 'goals against' column shows how many goals have been
scored by the opposition(s).

Hence, if USA were to win 4 - 2 then they would have 4 goals 'for' and 2
goals 'against'.

david...
i sorta' wonder what the NFL would do if they had to use world cup
scoring.. in our simple world, a win is a win.... the details don't
count... :)

JD Cooper...
unless it's a rout.. in which case the winners never let the loozers
forget the fifty point difference.

gloating is BIG!

NOT so. Getting into the playoffs there is a very complicated system.
Like soccer the won - loss record comes first but there are a lot of other
factors.
thanks, mick... i can now see that scoring is intense... winning a match
isn't enough... the number of goals scored for and against also count.

theoretical question:

- if team A scores 10 goals in one game, and loses the remaining 3
- if team B scores 2 goals in each of three games...
- if team C scores 1 goal in all three games
- if team D scores 1 goals in game against team A, and zero in others

that would leave team B with 3 wins, but fewer goals

My guess is that winning counts more than the points.... so I'm assuming
team B would be in first place.. winning 2 games
team C wins 2 games, but fewer points and is in second place
team A is in 3rd place for their point total
team D is in 4th place, having won 1 game against team A.

am i right? I see your explanation of earlier questions is proved at the
FIFA site... Trinidad is ahead of paraguay because they tied at zero...

thanks for your help..

noticed that Ghana is ahead of the U.S. because they have one less goal
against... (they have 2, U.S. has 3...)
