Al and I went to our favorite restaurant tonight. Al went to get something
from the car and didn't see the domed light above us. It was a little low
and fit him like a hat. I said,"Oh,honey, are you ok?" The manager ran
over, upset and helped me get this huge lampshade off Al's head. He was so
upset but Al was just fine. Just before he left,he told Al his dinner would
be free...then he stood all the way up and the lamp landed on his head. lol
Al reached up and helped him and said,"Is this a party or what???" hahahaha
The manager was a bit shaken but he laughed with us. As we were leaving,
they were raising all the lamps by their chains.

Bet that caused a laugh, sounds like a scene from 'Fawlty Towers'.

I loved "Faulty Towers" when it ran on PBS in the US. I love all the English
shows. It's funny though when I watch one I haven't seen before I have to
learn to understand them all over. The English have as many different

accents as we do across the country in the U.S.

That's true, hadn't thought of that before, there can be a significant
difference in just 50 miles or less.

Yes, I noticed that when I visited England.

I think a lot of it, is the class thing here; working class people are
proud of their roots & their accents. Previously, and even now, they
are looked down on by the more 'standard English' middle class. The
upper classes here, have awful accents (IMO) & I don't think they
consider that they have an accent !
My brother won a scholarship to a public school, many years ago, & was
told in no uncertain terms "you don't even know how to speak the
Queen's English"

Yes, I think you're right. We have regional accents, but not class accents.
You have both, so I think you probably have more different accents than we
do, in spite of the fact that we're much larger.

You should perhaps explain that "public schools" aren't at all public!

Of course, I'll have to be more aware of that. It can be v. confusing.
Public schools in the UK are expensive fee-paying schools, with
boarding facilities.
