I was woken up earlier this morning by clashes of thunder & a
torrential downpour - when I awoke, I thought I was in India, where
I've lived some years before - my teen then came in & said it was
weirdly like a tropical storm, which confirmed my view that this is not
normal English weather.
The storm soon passed over but does anyone else feel that their weather
is quite different from 20/30 years ago?
I heard someone speak about 'Global warming' nearly 20 years ago & they
were predicting we'd notice it within decades if nothing was done about
it.

That sounds exciting - I love storms. Hope you have your lights back on.

Glad I didn't buy any time share then :)

Our winters are certainly much, much milder than they were 25 years
ago. We lived in northern Vermont for 22 years and until the early
1980's Lake Champlain froze solid enough every winter that you could
drive an automobile across from South Hero Island to Plattsburg, NY.
It has not frozen across in years.
I do remember, as a child, some very hot summers in western New York
State and I guess if a kid thinks it's hot, it really was. :)
The current volcano eruptions and the consequent dust in the atmosphere
may have something to do with our severe summer storms???

That's interesting Norma, I didn't know about the volcano - don't
always follow the news - I know we certainly don't get as much snow in
the winter as we used to.
My brother & his family, came over from Zimbabwe about 5 years ago at
Christmas & my nieces & nephews were looking forward to snow which they
had never experienced; they stayed 3 weeks until the New Year but
didn't see anything other than brief flurries that didn't settle.

I meant my nieces & nephews children, I'm never sure what relationship
they are to me, am I their Grand Aunt ? I'd like to be Grand ;)

Of course, it you want snow, the weather won't oblige!

at precisely 2.38 this morning, I was woken by a great clash of thunder,
then again soon after by lashing rain.
As of this moment, it is cloudy, no rain but it is sticky muggy, with
absolutely no wind.

So! /you/ sent it down here, well we prob. sent it to France then ;)
It's muggy here as well, so I'm not even going to try to go back to
sleep.

The weatherman this morning said the first six mos. of this year were
the hottest in the states since they began record keeping in 1855 and
the sixth hottest globally. So globally anyway, there have been
hotter summers. Of course, summer isn't over yet. I know this summer
has been one of our wettest.
Jean B....

That's for sure. I haven't even turned on the outdoor water!

So it's obviously not just subjective. It's been veery dry here,
luckily I have several water butts around the garden & a couple fed
from gutter water; I water my plants with those & leave the grass to
fend for itself - less mowing :)
