waldo...
Effective 15 Jan 2006, the FHL is raising the cost of film rental from
$3.25 to $5.50.

Dave Hinz...
Cheap at twice the price. Sense of perspective, and all that.

singhals...
Well, probably, but then again, when I look at that list of films I was
too cheap to rent at $1.50 each ...? (g)

If you've been "gonna" rent those films, but never got around to it,
better do it soon and save a few bucks.

L Covey...
Pardon my ignorance, but what does FHL stand for? Family History
Library? Where is it located?

Steve Hayes...
Yes.

Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

L Covey...
I didn't recognize it being the same as the LDS libraries.

catalpa...
My local LDS FHL in PA raised the price as of today, 10 Jan 2005. With
notification and sales tax it is $6.15 a microfilm.

catalpa...
I was specifically told that PA sales tax rules require it and I can't prove

James A. Doemer...
That could be. Sales tax rules do vary from state to state. I've never
been charged sales tax for films here in Michigan.

otherwise.

Celia Mitschelen...
Yes, it depends on the state. Any business that has a connection in some
states has to collect and pay state sales/service tax to the state. While I
think the LDS church may not feel they are a business the state of Iowa says
they are providing a service that comes under the control of the tax
department. It is also working at getting Internet businesses to pay the
state sales tax.

Iowa also has this law. The LDS is not CHARGING the tax they are COLLECTING
it for the state and have to turn it in to the state. It must be a headache
for them.

Bruce Remick...
I wonder how much the availability of online Census page records on Ancestry and
HeritageQuest has affected the number of orders for census microfilm from the
FHL. I used to order several reels at a time at my local FHC, wait three or
four weeks, and then spend an hour or two transcribing what I found, if
anything. Since I subscribed to Ancestry's Census several years ago, I found I
could search a couple dozen reels worth of census entries in an hour for
possible ancestors. Before, this one hour search would might have cost me $100
or so and taken a couple months to complete. With me, the frustration was with
the long wait for films to arrive, much more than the reasonable rental price.

carolea7...
On the other hand, having folks who only arrived on the shores of the
US in 1905-1912, Ancestry has little to offer me. In the last 25+
years I have pretty much uncovered what I can in the states, primarily
through census (I live near a NARA branch) and FHC records
(pre-computer) and have that info organized. My current research is
limited to Croatia, and for that the FHC is my main resource.
