My grandparents immigrated to the USofA from Switzerland in 1910. I found
them in the Ellis Island records on my first attempt -- searched on my
grandfather's name and they popped up -- both names listed together on a
ship manifest.
We knew that he was 20 years older than she and we knew that he had made 2-3
trips to the States before he brought her. My father -- who died in
November 2005 -- occasionally said that his father had a first wife and a
daughter by that first wife but that the first wife and daughter had gone
back to Switzerland.
On the ship manifest of the 1910 entry, it states that my grandfather's
first entry into the US was in 1896. I find no record of his entry in
1896 -- the only time he shows up in the Ellis Island ship manifests is in
1910 with his second wife.
We have now located an old, not-very-detailed diary my grandfather kept that
makes spotty mentions of his first wife, their baby, and the first wife's
return to Switzerland.
I went back to the Ellis Island records looking for his other entries into
the US.
