The spelling must be 'Umlaut' or 'umlaut' instead of umlat.

Or even others, such as omljud or omlyd, depending upon which language
is involved. :-)

And it is quite easy to remember, the "laut" part being of the same
etymogical origin as the english loud and the nordic lyd/ljud

If XP is the same as Windows 98:-
1-use a US keyboard
2-install Portuguese (Brazilian) keyboard driver
(an icon on the task-bar allows switching between installed layouts)
3-for an accented letter type:- then to produce
accented letter. For ü type " (double quote mark) followed by u.
AFAIAA if you normally use a US keyboard and accented characters there
is no reason not to set the above as the default.

Write
ae instead of ä,
oe instead of ö,
ue instead of ü,
ss instead of ß.
Everybody in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and so on will understand
this kind of spelling.
You will find this kind of spelling in every German crossword
puzzle.
