This stuff always gets me confused.
Henning Boettcher...
|
Yes, me too.
One day my mother wanted me to go to my cousins and play with them.
But nobody of my family could tell me why these boys were called my
cousins or with other words how the relationship was between us.
This was one reason for me to start with my genealogy.
I found that the common ancestor of meand of my 'cousins' was born
1808!
Now if somebody wants to know any relationship I dn't tell him
something about great grandfather, cousin, uncles or aunts but I try
to draw a table with all people connecting the persons whose
relationship is asked for.
Third cousin once removed says nothing to me because we in Germany
and Switzerland don't know these terms.

1) Is the Grandson of my Grandfather's brother still my first cousin?
Christopher Jahn...
|
No, he'd be your second cousin. His father would be your first
cousin once removed.
|
James A. Doemer...
|
No, he would be your second cousin. Your father's first cousin would still
be your first cousin, one generation removed.
|
2) First cousins have the same grandparents. What if they only share one
Christopher Jahn...
|
Well, no. First cousins have a _set_ of grandparents in common;
unless siblings marry siblings ie, a sister and brother marry a
brother and sister.

grandparent?( I.e Grandfather re-married). Would people with the same
Grandfather but different Grandmother's still be 1st cousins or 1st half
Christopher Jahn...
|
They would be first half-cousins.

Welcome to my world, the world of half-first cousins, half-uncles and
half-aunts.
Until I got genealogy software, I'd never heard of these relationship
titles, though I knew my dad had half-siblings from his father's 2 other
marriages and his mother's 2 other marriages.

Yeah, welcome to my world where my 2nd Greatgrandmother was my 2nd
Greatgrandfather's half-aunt....

Add in adoption and talk about a huger mess!!
the_verminator...
|
Adoptions don't concern genealogists... only family historians- and
yes, there IS a very subtle and distinct difference.
KL...
|
What is the difference? If I were doing genealogy, which family tree do
I trace?
Dave Hinz...
|
Genealogy is about genetics. Adoptions are part of family history.
Me, I track both lines, but concentrate on the documentable genetic
links.
KL...
|
My problem is finding documental genetic links.
Maybe someday.

Yes, it is confusing, and I *think* I've got it taped now although I
still call all cousins of whatever degree a cousin.
