I am trying to trace my Stutzke ancestors who emigrated to the U.S.
from Germany in the late 1880s.
I have found records of 3 persons at the Castle Garden site that I
believe are part of the family, including my great-grandmother and
gr-gr-grandmother.
What I have found are:
1. Friedr. Stutzke age 17 origin Germany arrived 8 Aug 1888 on the
ship Hermann from Bremen. I believe this may be my
great-grandmother's brother Friedrich Wilhelm Stutzke born 11 Feb 1871
in Friedrichsruhe, Germany and who died 21 June 1891 in Sterling,
Illinois.
2. Wilhme. Stuetzke age 52 and Martha Stuetzke age 15 arrived 28 Mar
1889 on the ship Hermann from Bremen. These I believe are my
gr-gr-grandmother Wilhelmina Boehnke born 1836 in Berlin, Germany and
her daughter Martha Matilda Marie Stutzke born 28 Dec 1873 in
Friedrichsruhe, Germany.
I am interested in seeing what other passengers were listed on the
ships manifests immediately before or after these individuals, as that
may help me to track down the other members of the family whose
immigration records I have not yet found.
These other individuals are:
- Martin Stutzke born about 1840 in Berlin, Germany. Family legend
has it that he died enroute to America.
- Herman Julius Stutzke born 16 June 1864 Friedrichsruhe, Germany, his
wife Mathilda Pettlekau born 28 Oct 1869 Friedrichsruhe, Germany, and
their 2 children Eric Frederich Stutzke born 21 Dec 1888 and Marlene
Stutzke born 1889. I know that Hermann and family emigrated prior to
21 Dec 1890 as their 3rd child was born in Jordon, Illinois on that
date.
- Ferdinand Martin Stutzke born 7 Oct 1866 Friedrichsruhe, Germany. I
know that he emigrated prior to 23 March 1891 as he was married on
that date in Illinois.
Also the Castle Garden data for the 3 persons that I found all showed
their destination as being Maryland whereas all of the records I have
of them in the U.S. are from Sterling, Illinois and vicinity. Again,
I am hoping that information from the manifests may help shed some
light on this.
Any information or advice would be appreciated.
