I heard this song back in Oz as a YOUNG lad and the only part I
remember is a bit of the chorus which went, "Caroline Caroline I'm
coming home again.." I think it was very early 70s
and a male lead vocal which had a mainstream pop sound, neither too
folky nor too rocky.
Might have been a local like Johnny Young but I'm not sure, anyhow I
hope it rings a bell
with someone. It's not "Sweet Caroline". All responses greatly
appreciated.

Newman wrote "Caroline" for Harry's _Nilsson Sings Newman_ (the only
song written specifically for the album). Although "70's ... male lead
... pop sound" generally describes Nilsson's recordings, "Caroline"
features a simple arrangement with just Newman on piano. And there's
no lyric which sounds like "I'm coming home again."

The British act 'Status Quo' had a UK hit in 1973 with a song called
'Caroline'. The lyrics don't appear to match the ones you note, but
thought I'd mention the song, anyway.
Here are the lyrics to 'Caroline', by Status Quo:
If you want to turn me onto
Anything you really want to
Turn me onto your love sweet love
If the night-time is the right time
Anytime of yours is my time
We can find time for love sweet love
Come on sweet Caroline
You're my sweet Caroline
You know I want to take you
I've really got to make you
Come on sweet Caroline
Take my hand together we can rock-n-roll
When I'm thinking of you sleeping
I'm at home alone and weeping
Are you keeping your love sweet love
Do you still care when I'm not there
Do you really wish I was there
Can I come there for love sweet love
Come on sweet Caroline
You're my sweet Caroline
You know I want to take you
I've really got to make you
Come on sweet Caroline
Take my hand together we can rock-n-roll

Johnny Young had a song called Caralyn. Don't recall the lyrics though.

Here are a few more possibilities. All of the following artists have
recorded a track called 'Caroline' and released them on a late 60s /
early 1970s album:
Alan Ross (1974)
Danyel Gerard (1971)
Harry Nilsson (1969)
Livingston Taylor (1971)
Steve Ambrose (1972)
Hope that helps,
