Marie DiGerro...
Can someone please help me find the lyrics to a song for my mother? It's a
1950s hit by Jan and Dean or Jan and Arnie called "I Gotta Get A Date" or
"Gotta Get A Date". All I'm turning up are commerical sites trying to
sell CDs. I can't find the lyrics to this older hit song.

Many thanks.................

quester...
I don't have the lyrics, but I can give you a bit of info that may
help your search:

=====================================================================

From Joel Whitburn's "Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits:
Jan Berry and Dean Torrence formed group called The Barons while
attending high school in LA. Jan & Dean and Barons' member Arnie
Ginsberg recorded "Jennie Lee" in Jan's garage. Dean left for a
6-month Army Reserve stint, whereupon Jan signed with Doris Day's
label, Arwin, and the record was released as by Jan & Arnie. Upon
Dean's return from the service, Arnie (not to be confused with the
famed DJ of the same name) joined the Navy, and Jan & Dean signed with
Heb Alpert's Dore Label.

Shows "Jennie Lee released as Arwin 108

======================================================================

On 19 May (1958) “Jan & Arnie” released “Jennie Lee” backed by “Gotta
Get A Date” on “Arwin” records. Freeman was the arranger of “Jennie
Lee” and it went to #8 on the US pop singles chart and to #4 on the
R&B chart. "Jenny Lee" is said to be named after "Jennie The Bazoom
Girl Lee" a well-endowed stripper in the New Follies Burlesque in Los
Angeles. Both “Jan & Arnie” were “Jan Berry” and “Arnie Ginsburg” who
both were members of the group "The Barons". "Arnie" was not the same
"Arnie Woo Woo Ginsberg" who was a DJ on WMEX 1510 AM radio station in
Boston, Ma. Arnie recorded a few more records with Jan and then
decided to attend college. "Dean Torrence" who had just returned from
service in the US Army in 1958 joined up with his close friend and
football buddy Jan and formed the new duo of "Jan & Dean".

So the record you want is Arwin 108. "Jennie Lee" was a hit and rose
to #8, but the B-Side "Gotta Get A Date" didn't crack the Top-40. It
wouldn't be considered a "hit song", but if your mother really liked
it then that's all that matters. I had a few singles myself where I
preferred the B-side to the A-side.

Marie DiGerro...
Thank you so much Harold. She said she first heard the song on the radio in
the Bronx NY but her memory isn't want it used to be. She may have heard it
on someone's Victoria. I searched and searched and cannot find the words to
this song. I was able to download it using WinMX but we can't make out all
the words.

quester...
I see two possibilities for you.

First, if you make the MP3 available to others they might be able to
fill in the words in the places you're having trouble. (Even without
the MP3, if you post your best guess at the words other people could
suggest possible alternatives).

Second, look for covers by other singers to see if they are easier to
understand. For example, Frank Ifield recorded "Gotta Get A Date"
only two years later (1960), so the odds are good it is the same song.
Perhaps in his version the words are clearer.

Marie DiGerro...
Thanks again. I will certainly take your advice. Now mom has me curious to
know what the words are. ;o)

Marie DiGerro...
but my PC wont allow me to download them. I despise all these new security
measures in I.E..

That's because the site is trying to install spyware, and IE is trying
to protect you from it.

Use Firefox instead, and disable Javascript. Problem solved.
