cenorthamerica...
There was a young woman (teenager I think) in the 80's called by her
first name. It was like Bobby or Billy or Jessy or something like that.
She flew all over the world and had millions (?) of fans (mostly
girls?) although she was not widely known or famous (like say Madonna
or Joan Jett). She never had any hit songs that I'm aware of. Does
anyone have any idea who I'm talking about?

Rich Ardini...
Tiffany might be who you are thinking of.
As a bonus to you, her website,
has a list of many single-named singers
of the last 40-50 years.

Oh, and in the 70's there was another teenager singer. I forget her
name but I think she was Europe (Nordic country?) and she was very
popular. I think she went by one name and sometimes sang with a kind of
throaty growl. This was about 1975 or so.

Mark Rae...
Didn't appear on the scene till the 90s.

Could you be thinking of 'Melanie'?

Peace Will Come (According to Plan)
Bitter Bad
Brand New Key
The Nickel Song
Ring the Living Bell

Melanie with The Edwin Hawkins Singers
Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)

That sounds like a good bet, but Melanie became popular more
than a few years before 1975..

Melanie Safka, then, perhaps? 'cos Melanie Gabriel was still a kid
then.

Bill Marcum...
Haven't heard of Melanie Gabriel, does she go by just "Melanie"? Is she

Radio Yerevan Answers:

Dunno, Bill. Yet her web site features her as Melanie Gabriel, as does
her CD. No idea whether she markets her dad's surname actually, but
she's very talented and cool.

related to Peter Gabriel?

As above so below. You can see the duo, e.g., in the "Still Growing UP"
2-DVD.

Particularly the "Talk to Me" track also features an emotional, albeit
choreographic handshaking between dad and daughter. The performance is
so intense that, it brings tears in the eyes of both. And actually
tears are also in the eyes of the beholder, sorry, the watcher (of the
DVD, not of the skies this time, though), at least the one at this end
of this communication. He hugs her in the end and proudly introduces
her as:

"Melanie!" :)

Now, I don't think she's just 23, for her to be born in 1982 or so. I
think when Pete left Genesis, he was already the first family man in
the band (which is something the others could not understand at that
time, yet were to understand in years to come, from their personal
experiences), married with Jill and already with tot Melanie, if I'm
not mistaken.

So I guess she's actually already about 30 or so. Mark (Rae)?

Enjoy, anyway,
