movie question of the day: is our celebrity culture more or less extreme than during golden age of hollywood?

i think we admire our stars less than in the past. but, we are more
obsessed with them for some reason.
in the past, we looked up to stars as stars; there was a great distance
between us and them.
today, like in 'king of comedy', we see them as our friends, personal
enemies, next door neighbors, world savers, messiahs, punching bags,
etc. we love them and hate them; we love them cuz we hate them and
hate them cuz we love them. weird.

I think we admire the actors and actresses of the screen of yesteryear
for the main reason that they could act!

If only this were true ...

Nowadays if some biddy says two words on a screen she is on half a
dozen talk shows and hailed as the greatest thing since sliced bread.
She has become a "celebrity" and joined the ranks of 1000's of others
(of whom 990 we have never heard of) who are photographed constantly,
counselled for their opinions on everything - in some cases even on
acting in pictures and adored by the pea-brained who are told to like
them.

Perhaps the studio system was a good thing. It held reign on publicity
and kept the 'stars' out of constant limelight - which lead in some
ways to their appeal.
