Did anyone do music like Philip Glass's music before him?

La Monte Young.

Wikipedia calls La Monte Young "the father of minimalism" and I'd tend
to agree. His work sounds developed over time rather than derived from
other sources like Glass. "The Well Tuned Piano" is a beautiful,
brilliant work.
For Glass fans interested in expanding their horizons, I'd recommend
Robert Ashley. His "Perfect Lives," called the first modern American
opera, is terrific. And for more experimental repetitive
instrumentals, William Basinski is unbeatable. The "Disintegration
Loops" are his best.

(And I don't think you can safely say Reich preceded Glass. They're
pretty much peers.)

He was influenced by Ravi Shankar who did long, hypnotic ragas but did
not exactly repeat the same phrases over and over.
I bet his favorite Beatles song was Hey Jude.

I like that duet he did with Phil Collins "Easy Lover"
