NICOLE Kidman has been told a church annulment of her marriage to Tom Cruise
is likely, paving the way for her to remarry in the Catholic church.

I thought the Catholic church only gave annulments for Catholic
marriages? I was married in a civil ceremony, and I seem to recall my
grandmother telling me that I wasn't 'really married' in the eyes of the
church.

The CC only recognizes civil marriages as beinglegally valid and since
civil marriages are not "sacramental" your grandmother was correct in
saying they were not "truly married" in the eyes of the Chuch. Note:
"in the eyes of the Church". By no means is the CC saying civily
married people are not LEGALLY married. Being married only civily and
then divorced will not bar you from a Catholic wedding in your next
marriage. I have friends who are a married couple and were married to
each other civily years ago. Both had been married previously also in
civil marriages. When they had a conversion to Catholicism there was
absolutely NO problem with getting married in the CC. The proper CC
authorities simply took a look at their relevant paper work (marriage
and divorce papers for each partner) and declared their former (and
current) unions "non-sacramental". Thus they were cleared to marry each
other in the CC even though they were already civily married to each

a piece of paper saying "OK, you and (fill in the blank) are cleared for

I think you read it wrong. It's REmarry, this time in the CC. Not
REmarry for the second time in the CC.

I doubt she would get an annulment due to the simple fact she and Tom
have two children. To annul a marriage with kids would not be a great
message to send to the kids.
