Meet me for a beer later, says Foo Grohl
By Ben Cubby
May 6, 2006
THEIR tiny steel cage is not much of a mosh pit, but the post-grunge groove
of the Foo Fighters has helped Brant Webb and Todd Russell through some of
the hairier moments of their entombment.
And, after hearing Webb had requested some of his tunes on an iPod, the Foo
Fighters singer Dave Grohl has sent a message of support to the Beaconsfield
rescue effort.
In a fax from Seattle, Grohl, whose songs include such pertinent titles as
Miracle, Enough Space, Exhausted and Breakout, invited the two men out for a
beer when they get free.
The mine manager Matthew Gill, who has become noticeably more jovial as
rescuers dig closer, was of the impression on Wednesday that the Foo
Fighters were a country and western band.
That suggestion caused much hilarity among the media pack, and Mr Gill has
since been put right by his son. "My 16-year-old pointed out that the Foo
Fighters aren't in fact country and western," Mr Gill said.
"But I had a message from Dave Grohl - hi Dave, I have no idea who you are -
I passed on his message to Brant and Todd - I read it to them - and they
were both stoked by that, and I said that I'd pass it on to Brant through
the food hole.
"He said he'll collect the offer when he gets out.
"He basically said, 'I'm thinking of you', and anywhere, any time, to catch
up with two cold beers.
"And Dave wanted to know if it was a deal, and I can tell Dave that those
two say, 'Yes, it's a deal."
Asked why the former Nirvana drummer had got in touch, Gill said he had
probably been alarmed by the country and western reference and then moved to
"correct the record".

Dave Grohl aids trapped miners.
Wow - What a difference an "e" makes! (And what's with the weird quotation
marks?)
This sounds like it was Grohl's helpers who trapped the miners (Given the
orthographic climate, I was beginning to wonder whether "miners" was
actually "minors" -- I had the Foo Fighters guilty of child abduction and
molestation before I even got to the article!).
