Yeah he was in minority report but hey let's not kid ourselves, this was
a tom cruise and steven spielberg joint. Colin has a bit part.

Was Phone Booth really a certifiable hit?? I thought it was laughably
bad.

Certifiable hit : He's my definition (your mileage may vary)
- decent box office numbers. Made more domestically than it's
production budget.

Well, by that definition, then Colin Ferrell has had a few hits:
Daredevil (Production budget $78Mil, Domestic Gross $102Mil).
Successful enough to spawn a sequel.

This was clearly a Ben Aflac movie. (Though his leading man status is
called into question with his string of four consecutive flops: gigli,
surviving christmas, jersey girl and paycheck)

As with the minority report film, I use the star power argument. Was the
film a success because of Farrell or due to Affleck's (now shrinking)
fan base. At the time, Affleck was the bigger star and Farrell was still
the relative newbie. Ben was A-List. Colin was B+ list.
Phone Booth was clearly his.
Alexander was clearly his.
The Recruit was clearly his (Pacino just took his check and ran)

SWAT (Production $80Mil, Domestic Gross $116Mil)

You're right. Though it could be argued that it was equally Sam L
jackson's movie as well. Was it clearly Farrell's star power? or did
jackson's (quite sizeable) fan base figure into the film's success. But
I have to give it to you, SWAT was a box office success, it made approx.
~ 208 million worldwide.

Minority Report ($102Mil, $132Mil)
Again, using your definition.

Colin had a bit part in this. This was clearly a Tom Cruise movie.
That's like saying MI3 was a box office hit this summer because of
Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Alexander tanked
Hart's war tanked
SWAT tanked (it's a bad sign if LL Cool J is your co-star. Justin
Timberlake found that out)
The recruit tanked
Miami Vice is tanking
he doesn't seem to have box office magic or enough of a fan base to
support him through his sh*tty film choices.

I agree--and I say this as a Colin Farrell fan. He hasn't been able to
carry the movies where he's the central character, and he's made some
bad choices with scripts (although I think I heard that SWAT was a
"contractual obligation" film; hence the high # of quality actors stuck
in it with LL Cool J).
|
He may have Kevin Baconitis ( a servicable character actor but
definitely not a leading man).
MagsTheAxe...

Well, he does well as a lead in the smaller films he was in (Tigerland,
A Home at the End of the World), but he sure hasn't been able to
deliver the $$$ when cast as a leading man in big budget productions.
If he keeps this up, he'll wind up as the next Kevin Bacon or Jeff
Bridges--a respected, talented actor who can't open a movie.

That movie he made with Nicole Barain was a certifiable hit; he was not only
serviceable but definitely the leading man as well.

Woody Allen's French Nanny sez he ain't all that and his d*ck size has
been exaggerated.

Colin who....?

Brandy Alexandre...

Phone Booth wasn't a hit. Was it? I thought it was dull and he was
annoying.

I was one of the few who liked "The New World" but I'll have to agree
he was all wrong as Captain John Smith, his broad Irish accent was out
of context and struck a wrong note. (He's supposed to be an actor,
couldn't he have modified for the part for Chistsake!)

Might be. I will say that IMHO the real star of Phone Booth was Kiefer
Sutherland.

ITA with the last part and will add that just because a movie doesn't
do good at the box office, doesn't make it a bad movie. Alexander
wasn't too bad although I think Oliver Stone could have done much
better. Colin Farrell was also good in "Tigerland" and "A Home At The
End Of The World" (again, neither one exactly big at the US BO). He
also did comedy pretty well when he guest starred on "Scrubs", maybe
Colin should try a comedy.
