The Duke of Brunswick was made a KG 22.6.1878. He had been a GCH since
12.8.1815.

edespalais...
GCH, means .. ?

CJ Buyers...
Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Hanovarian Order of the Guelphs.

edespalais...
This order is a spinach Order, however perhaps not seen such in
England, Hanoveer

CJ Buyers...
It was awarded rather lavishly, by the standards of the time, and thus
did not have a very high reputation.

Officially a Hanovarian order, yet treated by the British Kings as a
Royal Family order and awarded more extensively in the British
interest.

Thank you (KG is obviously knight or knight of the Garter).

CJ Buyers...
Indeed so.

The duke used in his arms not only "Honi soit qui mal y pense"
Order of the Garter) but also Nec aspera terrent. This Nec .. since
when and as ..

CJ Buyers...
Isn't "Nec aspera terrent" the motto of the Hanovarian (Geulphic) Royal
House? I suppose, he had a right to it from birth.

Several regiments in the British army awarded the "White Horse of
Hanover", use the same motto, along with that distinction.
