Would anyone be able to provide examples of royals and nobles who were
married to individuals who were (at one point or another) their first in
line or very close (within 5th in line)? It would be rare if it exists at
all. Men who held their titles by virtue of marriage to an heiress don't
count. I am just looking for examples where there was a hereditary line of
succession. Of course, this is limited to houses allowing female succession.

In 1947, the man who was about 200th in line to the British Throne married the
woman who was first in line to the British Throne.

I believe he has now dropped to somewhere in the 490s.

I am aware of that, but it doesn't suffice.

What about Isabel II of Spain? Where did her husband fall in the line of
succession to the throne at the time of their marriage?
Two of the wives of Fernando VII of Spain were his nieces - one by his older
sister and one by his younger sister. How close to the throne were these
women at marriage?

Do Rudolf V and Queen Flavia count? :)

Many thanks in advance,

Best example I can think of is William III and Mary II of England. When
they were married in 1677, Mary was 2nd in line, while William was 4th.

I think that, at the time of the marriage, William was actually 5th
rather than 4th in line to the British crowns; King Charles II's heirs
were then:
1. James, Duke of York (the King's brother) [afterwards King James VII
& II]
2. Mary, daughter of the Duke of York [later Queen Mary II]
3. Anne, daughter of the Duke of York [later Queen Anne]
4. Isabella, daughter of the Duke of York (1676-1681)
5. William of Orange [afterwards King William III]
Slightly closer than this was the Lorraine intermarriage of 1445, when
Yolande, the daughter of the reigning Duchess Isabella, married her
second cousin, Frederick of Vaudemont. At that time the succession to
the Duchess Isabella was:
1. Jean, her son and heir
2. Yolande, her daughter and next heir
3. Antoine, her first cousin, eldest son of her father's next brother
4. Frederick, eldest son of the foregoing.

The case was the same when she ascended (the 1st in line was skipped
because he was a Catholic). However, of course, William was never
Mary's heir; at the time she ascended, so did he.
