Some sense here I think!

What has been the past practice with royal soldiers (as opposed
to naval officers)? NB that Prince Philip was not yet a member of
the RF in WW2, so the reference in the article to his service is of
limited relevance.

There are no rules or practice to go by. The last real career soldier
was probably the Duke of Connaught who served during the Fenian Raid in
Canada in 1870, commaned the Guards brigade at the Battles of Tel
el-Kabir and Mahuta in Egypt in 1882 (MID three times), and held
several active commands in India, the Med and at home.

I believe that his older brother, the Prince of Wales, asked to be deployed
to Egypt, but Queen Victoria vetoed the idea on the grounds that the heir
to the throne could not be put at risk in this way.

Prince Arthur of Connaught (MID twice) and the Duke of Windsor served
in staff positions during the Great War.
The late Duke of Kent served in Naval Intelligence and RAF Training
Command during WW2. His brother the late Duke of Gloucester as Chief
Liaison Officer to the BEF in France in 1939-40, then at Home Forces
GHQ, but did several inspection tours in the Middle East, North Africa,
SEA Command, etc.
The present Duke of Kent resigned from active service when he was
refused permission to command his regiment on an overseas tour or duty.
His brother, Prince Michael, served in Army Intelligence for several
years.
