Can it be explained why the wives of Nicholas I and Nicholas II were
both given the names Alexandra Feodorovna, and the wife of Alexander
III was Maria Feodorovna? Who was the Feodor in question?

sionevar...
Feodorovna was traditionally used when the name of the woman's father did
not easily translate into a Russian patronymic.

jlkenney...
Except we have Alexander I's wife Elisabeth Alexeievna (father's name:
Karl Ludwig) and Alexander II's wife Maria Alexandrovna (father's name:
Ludwig).

François R. Velde...
I though it had to do with the person who stood in as "godfather" at the
Orthodox conversion ceremony.

One explanation for the choice is that St. Feodor was the patron saint of
the Romanov family.

Don Aitken...
Another is that it comes from the Greek Theodore, which means "the
gift of God". Probably both facts contributed to the choice.
