marquess...
Yes in modern Britain, who do you think would be suitable to receive a
dukedom, what about Richard Branson?

atsarisborn...
Helen Mirren.

Michael Rhodes...
I believe it was decided a century ago that dukedoms would only be
awarded to those connected to the royal family.

chornedsnorkack...
When? How? How was the decision enacted?

The last dukedoms granted out of royal family:

1) 1892 - Argyll. Was already Duke of Argyll in Scotland.

2) 1876 - Gordon. Was already Duke of Richmond.

3) 1874 - Westminster. Was already 3rd Marquess - and the richest
person.

4) 1868 - Abercorn. Was already 2nd Marquess - and Viceroy.

5) 1833 - Cleveland. Was already 1st Marquess.

6) 1833 - Sutherland. Was already 2nd Marquess of Stafford.

7) 1822 - Buckingham and Chandos. 2nd Marquess - and husband of an only
daughter of an extinct Duke.

8) 1814 - Wellington - already 1st Marquess - and a hero.

9 to 11?) 1766 - Leinster. Already 1st Marquess of Kildare and 20th
Earl.

10 or 9 or 11?) 1766 - Montagu. Already 4th Earl of Cardigan - and
husband of a daughter of extinct duke.

11 to 9?) 1766 - Northumberland. Already Earl - and a viceroy.

chornedsnorkack...
Out of the current marquesses, who=B4d you suggest for dukedom?

Graham Truesdale...
HRH Prince Andrew might be interested to hear that ...

Count Said-Vassallo...
Branson is from the middle class society, perhaps he should be given an
Earldom and maybe if his descendants continue to be as successful as
Richard, then offer a Dukedom..

chornedsnorkack...
Are there any Ladies, and Mistresses or Misses, who ought to be created
suo jure hereditary duchesses?

Such as daughters and granddaughters of extinct dukes? Can you name any
people in such a plight?

In the Royal Family, since Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are not in
remainder to Dukedom of York, they should get something for their own
and their children... the notorious Earl of Snowdon has demonstrated
the dangers of trusting a husband with a title in his right, because he
can divorce and walk away with his titles, and worse yet might bestow
them on his subsequent wives and their children.

Ditto about Zara Phillips as well - it was Anne who asked not to get
titled, Zara has not been quoted as asking not to get titles!

chornedsnorkack...

Rico...
The a divorced person can't bestow titles on his subsequent wives (only the
soverign can), they automatically get the curtesy title of his own. eg,
Prince Charles couldn't bestow the Princess of Wales title on Camilla, she
automatically became entitled to use that when they married.

chornedsnorkack...
True. But it was Charles=B4 choice whether to marry at all (and thereby
make Camilla Princess of Wales) or stay unmarried.
