frederick...
Does anyone know anything about the Duchy of Sora, please?

It appears to have been on or near the border between the Papal States
and the K. of Naples, finally being incorporated in the latter in the
late 1700s. But was it a sovereign state, or perhaps a fief of Naples,
or what? Or was the dukedom merely a title that was held by a local
bigwig?

Guy Stair Sainty...
It was not sovereign, but a major fief - held for the past 450 years with the
dukedom of Arce by the Prince of Piombino, presently Prince Nicola
Boncompagni-Ludovisi.

frederick...
Thank you. I take it that it was an imperial fief?

Also, I get the impression that it was created in the 1500s. Assuming
that to be so, does that meant that it was carved out of Neapolitan
territory?

Guy Stair Sainty...
No, it was not a sovereign fief; but a territorial dukedom (along with Arce) in
the province of Caserta inn the kingdom of Naples, but given by Pope Gregory
XIII to his natural son, Giacomo Boncompagni, in 1580, and Arce in 1583.
Evetually they became simple hereditary titles; only Piombino and Elba were
sovereign territories, held from the Spanish Crown by the Princes Boncompagni
Ludovisi.
