Don Aitken...
It never occurred to me before, although it is obvious once you notice
it, that the royal connections who were made to give up their German
titles in 1917 got a rather obscure privilege in exchange. They all

Graham Truesdale...
What about Carisbrooke?

got peerage titles previously held by sons of the sovereign, which is
something which is never normally allowed, and seems to recognise a
special royal status.

Cambridge - son and grandson of George III (the second title, Viscount
Trematon, was held by the Duke of Cumberland of the creation of 1726)

Peter Tilman...
The Viscountcy of Trematon was the subsidiary title of the Earldom of
Athlone. The Marquessate of Cambridge had the Earldom of Eltham (previously
held as a subsidiary title of the 1726 Dukedom of Edinburgh I mentioned in
my other post) and the Viscountcy of Northallerton (held, like the Earldom
of Milford Haven mentioned below, as a subsidiary title of the Dukedom of
Cambridge held by the future King George II).

Graham Truesdale...
The first and second dukes were the maternal grandfather and uncle of the
first Marquess.

Milford Haven - the future George II while Duke of Cambridge

Peter Tilman...
Also, though the Earldom of Medina is entirely new, the Marquessate also has
the Viscountcy of Alderney (held, as a Barony, as a subsidiary title of the
1726 Dukedom of Cumberland I mentioned in my other post).

Athlone - Prince Eddy, Duke of Clarence.

Yvonne Demoskoff...
For "Peerage titles held by male-line descendants of sovereigns since
King George I", see

Graham Truesdale...
BTW the Countess of Athlone's father had been Earl of Clarence, and
her brother still was - until the 1919 Orders in Council under the 1917
Titles Deprivation Act.
